“To evaluate drug effects on motor coordination, balance and motor learning in rodents”
Rotarod test is widely used to evaluate the effect of drug on motor coordination, balance and motor learning in rodents. The principle of this test is that rats or mice are first trained to walk on a rod rotating at a certain speed. Once the animals have learned this, the effect of a test-compound on their motor performance is evaluated. Animals experiencing impaired motor coordination are unable to cope with the rotating rod and will drop off when the rotation speed exceeds their motor coordination capacity. When the animal drops from rod safely into its own lane, the time latency to fall is automatically recorded.

Normal Mode:
Fixed speed selectable from 0.1 to 80rpm can be set.
Acceleration Mode I:
User can set the speed to be achieved in selected acceleration time starting from 0 rpm. For example, if user sets End speed as 40 and acceleration time as 60 sec then, rotor will start from 0 rpm; individual lane timers will also start same time and rotor will reach 40 rpm speed in 60 seconds. Once rotor achieves 40 rpm, it will continue at 40 rpm up to the cutoff time.
Acceleration Mode II:
User can set the speed to be achieved in selected acceleration time starting from 0 rpm. Lane timers will start at the time when rotor achieves the speed of 1/10th of the End Speed. As the animal falls, time measurement of the corresponding lane will stop.
For example, if user sets End Speed as 40 and acceleration time as 60 sec then, rotor will start from 0 rpm and will achieve 1/10th of End speed as 4rpm. Rotor will keep rotating at 4rpm and as user selects Start key, individual lane timers will start and rotor will reach 40 rpm speed in 60 seconds. Once rotor achieves 40 rpm, it will continue at 40 rpm up to the cutoff time.

Orchid’s Digital Paw Pressure Analgesia Meter has been designed for rapid and precise screening of analgesic drugs on the normal and inflamed rat paw according to the Randall-Selito test and displays the pressure digitally.
This test is based on determination of the animal threshold response to pain induced in the paw by the application of a uniformly increasing pressure.
The user depresses a pedal switch to start the mechanism which applies the force. When the animal start to struggles, the user releases the pedal and the pressure at which the animal felt pain is displayed on the TFT Display. The Pressure applicator goes up automatically as soon as the measurement is over.
A remote foot-switch controls the motor allowing rapid hands-free experiments. An automatic system is activated once the distal extreme switch of the sliding support track is
reached or when the pedal is released at the test ending point. Then, the motor reverse its rotation, sliding up the pressure applicator again.
Force software can be used to automatically record the results on PC with USB adapter.

The Vogel test is a conflict test has become a standard for fast screening the potential anxiolytic properties of drugs. In this procedure, the drinking behaviour is punished by mild electrical shocks leading to a significant reduction of water consumption in deprived animals. Drinking responses are then re-established by drugs with anxiolytic properties.
Vogel test consists of a standard home cage for mice as well as rat associated with a grid floor. An electronic unit associated with a special nipple ensures the detection and counting of the licks reflecting the animal drinking behavior.
Vogel Test Apparatus is designed to induce anxiety within a subject and monitor the degree of drug effect by the administration of a mild shock after 20 licks on a sipper tube. The shock is delivered through the sipper tube and is maintained for a selectable duration of 0.25 to 2.0 seconds. The intensity of shock is user adjustable. With the onset of the initial shock, Anxiometer begins a three minute testing session during which the total number of licks and shocks (administered with every 20th lick) is recorded on front panel counters. The performance of anti-anxiety drugs can be measured by comparing the drinking behaviour of punished drugged rats to the behaviour of punished non-drugged rats.

Orchids Incapacitance Meter is used for measurement of pain and/or inflammation of the hind limbs on mice or rats. The Incapacitance test represents an unsurpassed method for assessing spontaneous pain in laboratory animal model with inflammation or nerve injury in one hind paw (neuropathy, incision etc).
In the Incapacitance test, animal is positioned in a holder specially designed to maintain in comfortable position on two separated sensor plates. Orchids Incapacitance Meter enables to quantify the spontaneous postural changes reflecting spontaneous pain by independently measuring the weight that the animal applies through each hind paw on respective sensor.
In the absence of hind paw injury, animal applies equal weight on both hind paws, indicating a postural equilibrium. After unilateral hind paw tissue injury, a lower weight is applied by the injured paw indicating postural non-equilibrium.
Orchids Incapacitance Meter, initiates a measurement cycle during which a number of force measurements are performed and averaged. The period over which these measurements are recorded is under user control; adjustable between 1 to 99 seconds. Tail Flick Analgesia Meter
For measuring pain sensitivity in mice & rats
Tail Flick Analgesia Meter measures pain sensitivity in mice and rats as they respond to heat application to a small area of the tails.
The instrument has a shutter-controlled lamp as a heat source. The lamp is located below the animal to provide a less confining environment. Lamp starts 5 seconds prior to actual shutter opening so that the heat source provides a constant temperature to the animal''s tail, avoiding temperature variations which are most common with non shuttered systems.
The animal is generally restrained and its tail is placed on a sensing groove on top of the instrument. Activation of an intense light beam to the tail results in a discomfort leading to tail flick out of the beam at some time point. Instrument can be used in auto mode or manual mode. In the manual mode, the foot-switch is released. In the auto mode the photo detector detects the tail flick, causing the timer to stop. The total time elapsed between shutter opening and animal''s tail flick is displayed on an easily read display located on the front panel.

For screening anxiolytic effects of drugs
The Vogel test is a conflict test has become a standard for fast screening the potential anxiolytic properties of drugs. In this procedure, the drinking behaviour is punished by mild electrical shocks leading to a significant reduction of water consumption in deprived animals. Drinking responses are then re-established by drugs with anxiolytic properties.
Vogel test consists of a standard home cage for mice as well as rat associated with a grid floor. An electronic unit associated with a special nipple ensures the detection and counting of the licks reflecting the animal drinking behavior.
Vogel Test Apparatus is designed to induce anxiety within a subject and monitor the degree of drug effect by the administration of a mild shock after 20 licks on a sipper tube. The shock is delivered through the sipper tube and is maintained for a selectable duration of 0.25 to 2.0 seconds. The intensity of shock is user adjustable. With the onset of the initial shock, Anxiometer begins a three minute testing session during which the total number of licks and shocks (administered with every 20th lick) is recorded on front panel counters. The performance of anti-anxiety drugs can be measured by comparing the drinking behaviour of punished drugged rats to the behaviour of punished non-drugged rats.

The Grip Strength Meter measures the muscle strength in both forelimbs and hind limbs, allowing assessment of neuromuscular function.
The system can be used to study effects of hormones, toxins, muscle relaxants as well as disease or the aging process on the muscular strength of the animal. The system can be configured for rats, mouse or other small laboratory animals.
Basically, the grip strength meter is positioned horizontally and the subjects are held by the tail and lowered towards the apparatus. The animals are allowed to grasp the metal bar or grid and are then pulled backwards in the horizontal plane. The force applied to the bar or to the grid just before it loses grip is recorded as the peak force. This force can be measured in Kg/Gram, Newton or lbs.

Orchids Incapacitance Meter is used for measurement of pain and/or inflammation of the hind limbs on mice or rats. The Incapacitance test represents an unsurpassed method for assessing spontaneous pain in laboratory animal model with inflammation or nerve injury in one hind paw (neuropathy, incision etc).
In the Incapacitance test, animal is positioned in a holder specially designed to maintain in comfortable position on two separated sensor plates. Orchids Incapacitance Meter enables to quantify the spontaneous postural changes reflecting spontaneous pain by independently measuring the weight that the animal applies through each hind paw on respective sensor.
